Tamiya 1/48 Douglas A-1H Skyraider
Being a Tamiya kit the construction process was pure joy. The kit was built out of the
box with regards to the airframe and no problems were encountered, like most Tamiya
kits this one fit great! When it came time to arm my A-1H I used photos of the real thing
to match the load out. The particular bombs needed were not in this kit boxing so I
used correct ones from a Hasegawa weapons set.
Upon reviewing pictures of the actual “Toilet Bomb” I saw that I would need to add a small spinner to the front and fins
to the rear of the porcelain. The spinner was sourced from the spares box and made from a long gone 1/700 ship kit
propeller. The fins were made by cutting off the rear end of a WWII 5inch rocket.
Future was used as a gloss coat. After application of the flawlessly performing Aeromaster decals they were then
sealed with another coat of Future followed by Polly Scale flat. Now I had my “Toilet Bomber”! It has never failed to
attract interest and questions at any model contest. I really enjoyed this build and the unique subject it allows me to add
to my collection.
